Product Choice: Grout Cleaner
Grout cleaning is probably my least favorite task of all the different cleaning tasks we tackle here at SCS. Finding a grout cleaner that worked really well made the task much easier. Don’t get me wrong, cleaning grout still sucks. But using a product that works well gets the job done faster and better. Zep grout cleaner was hands down the winner in the category of best grout cleaner.
Grout is the material that is used to fill gaps between tiles. Grout is typically found in shower walls and any floors made of tile. It’s often one of the most overlooked parts of a home when it comes to cleaning (understandable considering it’s quite a PITA). The disturbing part of grout cleaning (or not cleaning) is that grout is often a lighter color and looks like it’s brown (go ahead and guess what’s making it brown).
Grout cleaning is included in our deep cleaning package and as an option in our two-you-hate package. If you’d prefer to tackle this task on your own, by all means. Having the right materials for the job will help ensure you get it done properly and with minimal effort.
A major part of cleaning grout well is having the right tools. Any brush with a thin, long row of bristles will get the job done. I really like this brush because the bristles are really hard which means less arm power is necessary for scrubbing away that grout grime. But given the price and the fact that we go through many, many grout cleaners (we do clean and reuse our brushes however for each separate house we clean in a day, we use a new brush so they add up), I like to just use a toothbrush and buy a bulk pack like this. I get mine from the dollar tree and they come in a carrying case with 5.
Pour Zep grout cleaner on your grout, give it a few minutes, scrub with your toothbrush, use a sponge to wash away the Zep and then wipe up with a rag. Once you’ve hit all of your grout, go through and mop the entire floor so that the Zep isn’t sitting on your tile.
