The Pre-Summer Edit: Make Room for Freedom Before the Chaos Begins.

There's a brief window of time between the end of the school year and the start of summer chaos. It's a precious moment; a chance to breathe, organize, and set yourself up for success before the lazy days (and inevitable messes) of summer arrive.

This week at Syracuse Cleaning Services, we're focusing on the Pre-Summer Edit. The goal? Simplify your home now so you can actually enjoy the season instead of spending it tripping over clutter.

1. Donate Winter Coats and Gear

Let's be honest: by May, you never want to see your heavy parka again. Take advantage of that feeling.

- Go Through Winter Gear: Sort through coats, snow pants, boots, hats, gloves, and scarves.

- Donate What's Unused: If it didn't get worn this winter, it likely won't next year either. Donate gently used items to local Syracuse shelters or organizations.

- Store the Keepers: Vacuum-seal bags are your best friend. Compress winter gear and store it in labeled bins in the attic, basement, or closet top shelves.

2. Rotate Closets

If you're still digging through sweaters to find a tank top, it's time for a wardrobe rotation.

- Swap Seasonally: Move winter clothes (heavy knits, long sleeves, thick pants) to storage bins or the back of the closet.

- Bring Summer Forward: Move warm-weather clothes (shorts, t-shirts, sundresses) to the front and center where you can actually see them.

- The Try-On Rule: If you haven't worn it in a year, consider donating it. Closets should feel exciting, not overwhelming.

3. Toy and Game Purge

Summer means kids are home all day. If their toy collection is overflowing, you'll be swimming in Legos and missing puzzle pieces by June 15th.

- Involve the Kids: Let them help decide which toys they've outgrown. Frame it as "making room for summer fun."

- Rotate, Don't Keep All: Consider storing half the toys in bins and rotating them every few weeks. It keeps things feeling new and reduces daily clutter.

- Donate Before Summer: Local daycares, churches, and children's organizations often welcome gently used toy donations.

4. Pantry Reset for Summer Snacks

Summer eating looks different than winter eating. Heavy stews and baked goods give way to quick snacks, picnic foods, and easy meals.

- Check Expiration Dates: Go through your pantry and toss anything expired.

- Use Up Winter Staples: Challenge yourself to use up lingering winter items (oatmeal, soup cans, hot cocoa mix) before they take up space all summer.

- Reorganize for Accessibility: Move kid-friendly snacks to lower shelves where little hands can reach them independently (saving you from being the snack-dispenser a hundred times a day).

5. Create Summer Systems

A little planning now prevents chaos later.

- The Summer Command Center: Set up a bulletin board or magnetic board with a family calendar, chore chart, and a spot for sunscreen and bug spray.

- Outdoor Toy Storage: Designate a bin or shed spot for sidewalk chalk, bubbles, balls, and water toys. When kids know where things belong, they're (slightly) more likely to put them away.

A little editing now saves a lot of chaos later. By simplifying before summer hits, you're making room for what really matters: lazy afternoons, spontaneous adventures, and quality time with the people you love.
