Welcome to the Outdoor Living Season: Prepping Your Patio, Deck, and Grill.

Syracuse summers are a gift. The winters are long, the springs are wet, but when summer arrives, we know how to savor it. We fire up the grill, we host backyard barbecues, and we soak up every single sunny day.

But if your outdoor space has been neglected all winter, it's time to show it some love. This week at Syracuse Cleaning Services, we're taking the clean outside. Your patio, deck, and grill deserve attention too, because Syracuse summers are too short to spend them inside.

1. Pressure Wash Patios and Walkways

After months of snow, salt, and rain, your hardscaping is likely covered in a layer of grime, mildew, and algae.

- Concrete and Stone: A pressure washer (or a rented one from a local hardware store) can make decades-old concrete look brand new. Be careful with softer materials like brick or flagstone, use a lower pressure setting to avoid damaging the surface.

- Walkways: Clean walkways aren't just about aesthetics; they're also a safety issue. Algae and mildew can become slippery hazards.

- When to Call a Pro: If you don't own a pressure washer or don't feel comfortable using one, professional pressure washing services can handle it quickly and safely.

2. Clean Outdoor Furniture

Your patio furniture has been sitting under a tarp or braving the elements all winter. It's time to bring it back to life.

- Wicker and Rattan: Use a soft brush and mild soapy water to scrub away dirt. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely in the sun.

- Metal Furniture: Check for rust spots. Sand any rust you find and touch up with outdoor paint if needed. Wipe down all surfaces with a damp cloth.

- Cushions: If your cushions are removable, check the care tags. Many can be machine washed on gentle cycle. For spot cleaning, a mixture of mild dish soap and water works well. Let cushions dry completely before using to prevent mold.

3. Deep Clean the Grill

Nothing says summer like the smell of burgers on the grill. But a dirty grill isn't just unappetizing; it's also a fire hazard.

- Burn Off Residue: Fire up the grill on high for 10-15 minutes to burn off leftover food and grease.

- Scrub the Grates: After the grill has cooled slightly (but is still warm), use a sturdy grill brush to scrub the grates clean.

- Deep Clean the Interior: Remove the grates and use a putty knife or grill scraper to remove built-up grease from the inside of the lid and bottom. Vacuum out ash and debris.

- Don't Forget the Drip Tray: Clean or replace the drip tray to prevent grease fires.

4. Window Washing (Inside AND Out)

You've been looking through winter-smudged windows for months. Cleaning them inside and out makes an astonishing difference in how your home feels.

- Inside: Use a squeegee and a microfiber cloth for streak-free results. Don't forget window sills and tracks (check back to our spring cleaning series for tips on those!).

- Outside: If you have second-story windows, safety first. Consider hiring a professional window washing service to handle hard-to-reach areas.

- Screens: Remove window screens and gently wash them with a soft brush and soapy water. Rinse with a hose and let them dry before reinstalling. Clean screens mean cleaner air when you open the windows.

5. Storm Door and Screen Maintenance

Your storm doors have been working hard all winter. Give them some attention so they're ready for open-door season.

- Clean the Glass: Storm doors accumulate a surprising amount of grime.

- Check the Screen: If the screen has holes or tears, replace or patch it before bugs become an issue.

- Lubricate Hinges: A little WD-40 on squeaky hinges goes a long way.

Your outdoor space is an extension of your home. By giving it the same attention you give your interior, you're creating a welcoming environment for all the summer memories to come. Now fire up that grill, you've earned it.
