Kids Are Home. Help. Surviving Summer with Sanity (and Cleanliness) intact.
The backpacks are stashed, the lunchboxes are retired, and the school year is officially over. Summer is here!
And so is the mess.
Summer with kids is a beautiful, chaotic, sticky, sandy, magical whirlwind. There will be popsicle stains on the patio, sandy footprints by the back door, and art projects covering the kitchen table. That's okay. That's summer.
But that doesn't mean you have to live in chaos. This week at Syracuse Cleaning Services, we're talking about how to survive (and even thrive) with kids home for summer. We handle the messy part so you can focus on the magical part.
1. Zone Cleaning with Kids Underfoot
Deep cleaning an entire house while children are home is a recipe for frustration. Instead, adopt the zone method.
- One Zone Per Day: Focus on one area of the house each day (Monday: kitchen, Tuesday: living room, Wednesday: bathrooms, etc.). This keeps the workload manageable.
- Involve the Kids: Give them simple tasks within the zone. A five-year-old can dust baseboards with a sock on their hand. A ten-year-old can vacuum a single room.
- Accept That It Will Take Longer: Cleaning with "helpers" slows you down. Build in extra time and lower your expectations for perfection.
2. The Daily Reset: Your Sanity Saver
The chaos of summer tends to accumulate. Without the structure of the school year, messes can spiral. The antidote is a simple daily reset.
- The 15-Minute Pickup: Before screens go on in the afternoon or before dinner, set a timer for 15 minutes. Everyone in the family picks up whatever they can. Toys go in bins, dishes go in the dishwasher, shoes go in the closet.
- Kitchen Reset: Wipe down counters, load the dishwasher, and sweep the floor every night before bed. Waking up to a clean kitchen sets a calm tone for the day.
- The "Five Things" Rule: When a room feels overwhelming, tell the kids (and yourself) to put away just five things. It's a low-pressure way to make a dent.
3. Stain-Proofing Strategies
Summer brings a new category of stains: popsicles, watermelon juice, grass, mud, and sunscreen. Be proactive.
- Designate "Play Clothes": Keep a basket of old t-shirts and shorts specifically for messy activities. Kids change into these before painting, playing in the mud, or eating watermelon outside.
- Treat Stains Immediately: Keep a stain treatment spray or a mix of white vinegar and dish soap in the laundry room. The faster you treat a stain, the more likely it is to come out.
- Use Washable Everything: When possible, use washable markers, washable paints, and machine-washable outdoor cushions.
4. Involve Kids in Chores
Summer is a great time to build life skills. Kids are more capable than we often give them credit for.
- Age-Appropriate Tasks:
- Ages 3-5: Put toys in bins, wipe baseboards with a damp cloth, bring their plate to the sink.
- Ages 6-8: Make their bed, sort laundry, feed pets, set the table.
- Ages 9-12: Load the dishwasher, vacuum a room, clean their bathroom sink, take out trash.
- Make It Fun: Turn on music, set a timer for a race, or use a chore chart with small rewards.
5. When to Call in Backup
Here's a secret: you don't have to do it all yourself. Summer is short, and your energy is precious.
- Pre-Vacation Clean: Nothing beats coming home from vacation to a clean house. Schedule a professional clean right before you leave so you return to fresh sheets and sparkling surfaces.
- Mid-Summer Reset: If the house feels like it's spiraling by mid-July, a professional deep clean can reset the baseline.
- Post-Birthday Party: If you're hosting summer birthday parties, let us handle the cleanup so you can actually enjoy the celebration.
Summer with kids is messy and magical. You don't have to choose between them. By setting up simple systems, involving the kids, and knowing when to ask for help, you can enjoy the season without drowning in the mess.
